Whitley Bay Carnival puts on spectacular parade as it celebrates 10th birthday

The streets of Whitley Bay came alive with colour, music and cheer as the parade made its way through the town to kick off the bank holiday weekend

Saturday, May 27 saw Whitley Bay Carnival return for its 10th outing - kicking off celebrations with a show-stopping parade.

And this year was bigger and better than ever, with the sun even getting out for the occasion as locals headed out in their hundreds for the start of the bank holiday weekend. Families lined the parade route running through Whitley Bay to get a glimpse of the entertainment, which included music, dancing, circus acts and eye-catching costumes.

The Carnival brings local and international artists together with the community, showcasing all the brilliant talent the seaside town has to offer. Excitement was high as people of all ages took part in the lively parade, showing off the results of their hard work and preparations to the cheering crowd.

Saturday's celebrations went on to see acts take the Plaza Arena Stage, including the North Tyneside Steel Band, Host DJ Sista Soul, Drumdin, the Whitley Women Choir, and the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band. The music is continuing into the evening on the Marquee Stage, with The Carnival Ball kicking off from 6pm featuring the world-renowned Baghdaddies, as well as games and prizes to be won.

The festivities will continue into Sunday, May 28, with the North Tyneside Pipe Band, Bradley Creswick’s Western Swingfonia, The Often Herd, Back Chat Brass, Monster Ceilidh Band and MSK Jazz among those taking to the Plaza Arena and Marquee Stages between 10am and 5pm. There will also be street theatre performances at Spanish City, as well as additional performances on the 'Rainbow Corner' of Marine Avenue.

Visitors are also being treated to pop-up street food, bars and a fairground across the weekend. Take a look at some of the lively parade celebrations below.
