Take a peek at Lumiere 2023 as it opens in Durham and Bishop Auckland for four days

Lumiere 2023 will take place in Durham city and Bishop Auckland, County Durham, between Thursday and Sunday

The UK's largest light festival is set to attract thousands of visitors this week.

Lumiere 2023 will feature a series of light-art installations from world-renowned artists. It will open in Durham and Durham Cathedral , County Durham, on Thursday and last until Sunday.

The festival, which is free for everyone to attend, will be the biggest yet with more than 40 installations. It will transform the Durham city into a nocturnal art experience, hosting works made with light on its streets, bridges, buildings and river.

  • The light artworks which will appear in Lumiere include Ai Weiwei’s Illuminated Bottle Rack, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Pulse Topology and Adam Frelin’s Inner Cloister.

    Javier Riera's Liquid Geometry will be located on the Palace Green, outside of Durham Cathedral, and Mr. Beam's Colour the Castle will be available to view at Durham Castle. At the Market Place in Durham city centre will be Chila Burman’s Hurts So Good.
