Former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas has lauded the performance of Nick Pope in the 1-1 draw with PSG on Tuesday night.

The Magpies found themselves on the end of a controversial penalty decision that robbed them of all three points at the Parc Des Princes, but had it not been for Pope, it could have been a different scoreline all together.

Pope pulled off a number of brilliant saves to deny the home side, only for Kylian Mbappe to find a way past him at the death from the spot. His display was a timely reminder for England boss Gareth Southgate who left him out of the recent senior Three Lions' squad.

"He was incredible tonight - he’s arguably had the best game of his life on one of the biggest stages he’ll ever play on," Jenas told TNT Sports. "Everything that was coming his way, he just saved everything.

"PSG put on a lot of pressure at the end, but Newcastle worked hard to earn those moments that they got off with. They rode their luck a little bit, but there’s no denying them their credit.

"I thought tactically they were fantastic, they started to defend the box, they did that so well, bodies in front of the ball, Nick Pope pulling out world-class saves, but essentially, the feeling walking into that dressing room will be disappointment.

"Eddie Howe has to gather his team together, that’s his job now, he has to make sure they get their heads back up because that is a very bitter pill to swallow."
